History, Culture and the Outdoors in Alexandria and Pineville

The Kisatchie National Forest is incredible, with a wide variety of rare plant and animal species and nearly two hundred kilometers of trails. A rejuvenating hike through the forest is a great way to appreciate Louisiana’s natural beauty. For a little fun in the sun, I take an early morning kayak ride around Kincaid Lake in the Calcasieu Ranger District. The serene environment, with its tranquil waters, balmy breezes and lush greenery, is the perfect place to unwind.

After a day surrounded by nature, I head to the Alexandria Museum of Art to check out Louisiana’s dynamic arts scene. Featuring a variety of up-and-coming and prominent artists from the U.S. South, the museum offers a glimpse into Central Louisiana’s rich and diverse culture. Rotating exhibits, an impressive collection of pottery and prints and exciting after-hours events and lectures make this a must-see cultural attraction.

Afterward, I stop in at The River Oaks Square Arts Center, housed in the historic Bolton Home and Studio Annex Building. The Center is home to multiple galleries, abundant studio space and a full-scale ceramics studio. Upon entering the Bolton Home, I discover that each room has been converted into coveted studio space for local artists, with every inch of the home inhabited by vivid, thought-provoking art. Whether you come for the beautiful architecture or the gorgeous contemporary art, no trip to Alexandria is complete without a visit to this unique treasure.

Central Louisiana is not only an exciting creative hub, but also a rich historic destination. At Forts Randolph and Buhlow State Historic Site, located in downtown Pineville, I learn all about the area’s unique heritage. Situated on the scenic Red River, this captivating site offers visitors an authentic perspective of life as a soldier during the U.S. Civil War, including period cooking demonstrations, Civil War reenactments and rare artifacts. Thanks to an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide, my visit is nothing short of amazing!

After a whirlwind trip to Alexandria and Pineville, it’s time for me to head home. I’ve had an unforgettable time exploring the outdoors and soaking in some of the area’s impressive culture and history. You’ll have to go check it out for yourself!
